"Taekwondo: Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Warrior" isn't like other taekwondo books on the market. Instead of photos and descriptions of techniques, author Doug Cook takes the reader through a comprehensive discussion of Taekwondo history, principles, and philosophy.
Cook discusses broad topics like discipline, commitment, and honor, then identifies how these topics manifest themselves in taekwondo training. Cook also discusses themes common to many martial arts, such as the use of ki or forms.
Cook provides a history of taekwondo that, while proud of taekwondo's success, doesn't attempt to place takewondo on a pedestal above all other arts. Cook also admirably takes on the controversy of taekwondo as martial art or martial sport. His take on the issue? Taekwondo is both--you can find dojang (schools) that teach a sport-oriented takewondo, or you can find more traditionally-oriented schools. It's your choice.
"Taekwondo: Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Warrior" is a great resource for the taekwondo student. Students of other arts can also benefit greatly by learning more about what takewondo is all about.
