S.2554 Passes by Wide Margin
The cause for arming airline pilots against terrorists got a major boost by the passage of Senate bill 2554, the Armed Pilots Against Terrorism and Cabin Defense Act.
This bill continued the momentum of H.R. 4635, passed by Congress a few months ago.
The new legislation paves the way for volunteer pilots to be trained in armed and unarmed combat techniques and to be issued firearms to protect an aircraft's flight deck.
Surprising to some was the strong sponsorship of Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), a strident gun-control voice. Boxer's partership with Senator Bob Smith (R-NH), a long-time NRA and gun rights supporter, was seen to be key to its successful vote.
